Roller coaster Physics

Thinking back to our roller coaster build, how would Newton's Laws be applied?  Explain how at least one of Newton's Laws would apply.  Also, how does Potential and Kinetic Energy vary as a cart moves along a roller coaster's path?  Be sure to answer these questions in your original post and post a response to at least one classmate.

  1. MS PD:1 One of Newton's laws is that an object in motion tends to stay in motion, unless another force is acted upon it. With our rollercoaster, the rollercoaster gravity was pulling down on the moving cart, stopping it. Potential energy was present during the time the rollercoaster was on the starting hill, and kinetic energy was present while the cart was moving along the track and down the hill.

    2. I agree with mark because when the cart was at the top of the hill. that was when it had potential energy holding it in its place. until we pushed it and then thats when kinetic energy starting pushing it down the hill and along the tracks.

    8. CS PD:1 I think that the law that makes most sense to the roller coaster lab is the first law of motion. I think this because the first law of motion states that " Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it." and with that it makes most sense seeing as the roller coaster when we put the car on it kept going until it ended or when we removed a part, also potential energy was high when we were at the top nut when we went down and tried to go up another it wasn't as strong and kinetic energy was strong when the cart was going down the slop instead of going up.

  4. IG period:7, Thinking back to our roller coaster build Newton's first law which is "Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it" applies because of the force in which we applied to make the cart move and if we did not move the cart, it would stay in the state of motion of being still before moved. Potential and kinetic energy vary as a cart is moving along a roller coaster's path because Potential energy means stored energy and kinetic energy is the ability to move. Therefore the potential and kinetic energy vary as a cart moves through a roller coaster's path because the cart is using it's stored energy and kinetic energy.

An object in motion stays in motion until it has come to a speed where it is not good enough for the moving object to proceed any farther or has come to a complete stop. When we did the roller coaster experiment, kinetic energy was impacted when the cart was moving down hill. Potential energy was impacted when the cart was moving up hill.

  13. NG P7: One of Newton's Laws that can be applied to our roller coaster build is Newton's 1st Law. Newton's 1st Law is "An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force". This would apply because in our roller coaster, or any roller coaster, the cart didn't stop until it hit the stoppers at the end that forced it to stop. Potential and Kinetic Energy varies as a cart moves along a roller coaster's path because when the cart goes up a hill, it's building potential energy that will be released at kinetic energy when it goes down the hill.

One of newtons laws is "For each action there is an equal and opposite reaction." This law would be applied when the roller coaster would goo up a hill, it would have the same amount of force to go down the hill. This would also be an example of kinetic and potential energy. Newton's Laws can apply to the roller coaster build because one of the laws said that an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by another force. Same thing goes for if an object is sitting still. For example, we had to push the car to make it move down the track. Newton's Laws of motion can apply to the roller coaster build. One of the laws was that an object in motion will stay in motion unless a larger force is acted upon it. The roller coaster did not move until we pushed it, us pushing it would be the larger force. The roller coaster build had both potential and kinetic energy. 27. Newton's second law of motion is that the relationship between an object's mass m, its acceleration a, and the applied force F is F = ma. This can apply to the roller coaster build because the mass of the cart can determine how fast the cart goes and what the is force of the cart on the coaster. After we pushed the cart, the force was determined on how fast the cart was going and its weight. There was also kinetic and potential energy involved with the roller coaster. It varied based on the height of the slopes the coaster had, kinetic energy being the fall of the cart on each slope, and potential energy at the short stop of the cart at the top of the slopes. The energies were applied at different times and were an important part of the roller coaster's function. JJ P:3

  32. MM:P8: Newton's second law of motion applied to the roller coaster build. The roller coaster also had acceleration while gravity pulled on it when going down the hill. As Newton's law said; a object can move forever unless a force stops it. The roller coasters could move forever if gravity didn't exist and the tracks were infinite. Potential and kinetic energy also play a part. They are what the roller coaster depends on to work. They were in effect at the fall of the cart and at the moment where it stops for a second.

This is related to roller coasters because at the beginning of the ride, the roller coaster is at rest, then when the ride begins, the roller coaster won't stop until it breaks and comes to a halt. Also, at the top of the hill, the roller coaster has potential energy and as it goes down, it picks up more and more kinetic energy.

Newtons law is that an object in motion stays in motion stays in motion unless force is applied to it. When a roller coaster is about to go down that is potential energy. The energy that is released when the roller coaster is going down is called kinetic energy.

  56. C.C P:4 Newtons law is that when an object is in motion it shall stay in motion unless force is added to it. When the roller coaster goes up it is potential energy because it did not reach its maximum speed. And entice energy is when the roller coaster would past the high point and reach it maximum speed.

  57. OM P1 Newton's first law of motion is an object in motion stays in motion until force is applied. When the roller coaster is at the top of the hill it stores energy called potential energy and when it goes down gravity turns it into potential energy

One of Newton's laws is an object in motion tends to stay in motion, unless other forces is acted upon it. With the roller coaster, it's gravity was pulling down on the moving car making it stop. Potential energy was involved at the time the roller coaster was at the top and kinetic energy was also while the car was moving down the hill.

  61. (md,p:3) one of newtons laws is newtons first law. a object that is in motion stays in motion unless force has been applied. potential energy is when energy is building up. like in our lab when when the coaster went up the hill. kenetic energy kicks in when the coaster goes down the hill it releases the potential energy.

  62. HS P4: One of Newton's laws is that when an object is in motion it would stay in motion unless force is added to it. This is in the roller coaster since the roller coaster keeps going until a force stops it. When a roller coaster goes up its potential energy because it did not get to its most speed. As the roller coaster cart is going down it realeses the potential energy and changes to kinetic energy.

  63. hv:p.4 one of newtons laws is when an object is in motion it stays in motion unless force is added to it. this happens with a roller coaster because it goes up with potential energy and then once it is in motion it doesn't stop until the force stops it. as the roller coaster starts to drop at a high elevation its potential energy changes into kinetic energy

  65. CG P1: According to Newton's second law, the relationship between an object's mass (m), its acceleration (a), and the applied force (F) is F=ma. For example, when the roller coaster is going down a steep hill, the force of gravity makes the coaster speed up. When the roller coaster goes up, it's building potential energy. Then when it releases from the top it becomes kinetic energy.

  66. CF P1- One of Newton's laws is that an object will stay in motion unless a force acts upon it. This applies to roller coasters in the way that friction between the cart wheels and the track slows the cart down. Potential and Kinetic energy are also acting on the cart. When the cart reaches the top of a hill, it has potential energy because it is still for a moment, right before its energy goes in motion. Kinetic energy is acting on the cart when it is in the act of going down the hill, since the cart's energy is in motion.

  67. I agree with charmaine because she said that with a steeper hill, the cart will go faster. The flatter the hill, the slower the speed.

  68. PP P7: One of Newton's laws states that an object in motions stays in motion unless another force acts upon it. A roller coaster for example, when it goes up the hill it stores Potential energy. But when the roller coaster goes down the hill Kinetic energy acts on the roller coaster because it's in motion.

  69. JD :P4 At the top of the roller coaster hill is potential energy going down a hill is kinetic energy the whole time it is the conservation of energy.all thought kinetic energy can move down hill is that it picks up speed to make kinetic energy. The potential energy is a result of gravity pulling downwards.

  70. JD :P4 i agree with cooper because he said between the wheels and cart slows it down. Then the kinetic energy is acting on a cart when it is in the act of it that it is at a fast speed but slowing down as it goes of kinetic

  71. AM :P8 In Newton's first law it says that an object in motion will stay in motion until acted upon by an equal force. This law relates to roller coasters because without the friction between the brakes and the car tracks, the car would continue rolling. When at the top of a hill on a roller coaster, the car has stored energy which is called, potential energy. And when the car is going down, the potential energy turns into kinetic energy using momentum.

  72. MB P8 Newton's first law: Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it. A roller coaster has potential energy when it is on top of the Peak and kinetic when it is in motion

  74. AA:P.8 Going back to when we did the Rollercoaster experiment Newtons first law was, every object in a state of uniform motio. Tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it. The roller coaster had energy on the top of the hill and push to get kinetic movement

  75. SO p.4 Newtons first law is every object in a state of motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to the object that is in motion. On a rollercoaster The rollercoaster has the most potential energy when it is at the very top of the first drop and it has kinetic energy when it is in motion along the tracks.

  76. JY p.4 Newtons first law is applied because when the cart is at the top of the hill the only thing that is pushing it is the band that pulls it to the top. After the cart goes off the top of the rollercoaster the only force that is pushing it is the weight of the cart while the ride goes down. The rollercoasters most potential energy is at the top of the the first hill and when it moves on the tracks is has kinetic energy.

  77. According to Newtons first law an object stays in motion unless a force is applied on it. When we pushed the cart down the hill it had a lot of kinetic energy and it needs a lot of potential energy to make it up the next hill.
