Some evidence that we have about Continental Drift is that all of the continents fit together almost perfectly. Pangaea can always happens again because the continents are always moving and shifting around.
some evidence we have that support the idea of continental drift and the land once known as Pangaea is fossils found and mountains.there is another idea that the continents will travel the whole earth and make Pangaea once again. i got a question what would happen if the states broke apart and became other islands and when all the continents once again become Pangaea all the states and continents would not fit together. wouldn't that be a natural disaster causing all the states and continents would still be trying to move?

If you look at the continents,they all seem to fit together if we turn them certain ways. Like the pieces of some contiental puzzle. Due to continental drift, these continents are always moving apart so there will be another Pangea on the other side of the world.(Contients move about 1cm per year).
Many fossil comparisons along the edges of continents that look like they fit together suggest species similarities that would only make sense if the two continents were joined at some point in the past. Another Pangaea wouldn't happen again exactly (in the sense of it being exactly the same shape and fitting together flawlessly), but it is likely that another supercontinent of some type will form eventually.

We have evidence that supports the theory of continetal drift and plate tectonis because living mammals that live on different continents, for example Madagascar and India, are very similar to eachother. However, Madagascar and India are not close-by and the mammals on Africa are vaguely different. As we know, Madagascar is now off the coast of Africa today. Pangaea could very well happen beacause the Earth moves constantly and one day they may connect again.

Yes, I think that Pangea could happen again. The tectonic plates moved more than once and is probably moving as we speak. Today in science class, we did a lab about plate tectonics moving and separating to make new lands forms. I know this because, South America and Africa make a bigger land mass. Its like a puzzle that connects other continents to make a one big puzzle piece. There was evidence that supports the theory. There were dinosaur fossils located in parts of the world that are now separated by water and no other way of getting across the sea. There were the same types of dinosaur fossils in different continents. We might not know that the plates will move in our time, but it can move again.

V.D. Pd.8 Numerous and extensive clues we have point us toward the assemble of continents known as Pangeae. Fossils from the same species were found on two different continents. This was one piece of the puzzle. Th single, mass Pangeae from 300 million years ago can happen again since the tectonic plates are constantly shifting. 40-80 million years ago, India collided with Asia, therefore creating the Himalayan mountains. The Atlantic Ocean has gradually been getting bigger and the Pacific has shrunk since then. The continents continue to move a couple centimeteres each year. About 60 million years from now, scientists now have reason to believe that Australia will be as far north as the Equator! With supporting evidence and clues, I believe tht in the future, the continents will again form one single mass.

Many earthquakes and volcanoes are formed near plate boundaries, so it supports the theory of plate tectonics. Pd. 8: The evidence presented for the continental drift theory, proposed by Alfred Wegener, is solid and very reputable, therefore the once existent and ancient uniformed landmass, named Pangaea, is undoubtedly possible. (Ironically, the name quite literally means "all land") For starters, plant and animal fossils have been found on opposite sides of vast oceans. The chances of that occurring as separate land masses and ending up with the same genetic code and body structure are next to impossible. There is another piece of evidence in the fossil category: Hardly any fossils found in the ocean are more ancient than 180 million years old. This is explained by Harry Hammond Hess's theory of seafloor spreading. Over the course of time, new "ocean floor" is generated when magma is driven up through ridges ("ridges" are oceanic ridges that look like the land form known as a divide, except only with a depression that looks like a cut running down the length of it) while in other locations it is being crushed and driven below the surface, therefore eventually turning it into magma once again. This explanation is also supported by the fact that ocean rock is always younger when closer to the ridges and older when further away from the ridges. However, the reasoning for thinking that Pangaea once existed is also logical, not just the jargon of the complicated scientific category. The continents and a few of the other large landmasses clearly fit to together. On first attempt, an individual will realize that the pieces are not exactly the best jigsaw puzzle they have come across. This is because the continents were effectively, put informally, "squashed and stretched" over time. India was also a separate land mass at the time before it set a crash course with Asia. It, as might know, indeed did crash. However, this collision generated so much force that it formed the famous and very large Himalayan Mountain Range, which today proudly stands with Mount Everest as the spearhead. Some people insist stubbornly that Pangaea cannot happen again. This is rather worrying because this is a very simple matter of logical reasoning. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a extremely long oceanic ridge that runs down the middle of the Atlantic and stretches about 3/4 the way from North and South Poles. Lately, much activity has been going on around this ridge, and each year this activity is pushing the continents farther and farther apart. Basically, the Atlantic is "stretching" and the Pacific is "shrinking". Therefore, the continents will obviously end up on the other side of the world when the Pacific has shrunk to nothing. (or at least, almost nothing) On the other hand, no one alive today will still be alive when the new Pangaea has been formed simply because of the rate of motion, which happens to be 2-3 centimeters each year. The snail is so much better. With the wonders of logical reasoning, I truly believe that Pangaea Version 2.0 is inevitable.

Alfred Wegener first thought of this idea by noticing that the different large landmasses of the Earth almost fit together like a jigsaw, and in 1960, Hess made his single most important contribution, which is regarded as part of the major advance in geologic science of the 20th century. In a widely circulated report to the Office of Naval Research, he advanced the theory, now generally accepted, that the Earth's crust moved laterally away from long, volcanically active oceanic ridges. Evidence we have to prove this theory is fossils found around the world of the same species of creatures, and that each continent fit together almost smoothly. Unless an earth quake or the plates shift, there probably won't be a pangea again.

ReplyDeleteEvidence that we have is that scientists found fossils of dinosaurs in two different continents but for the same animal and that is only possible if the continents broke apart and drifted from each other which is what happened. Yes, I believe that the continents will continue to move because they are slowly shifting all the time.

This means that these dinosaurs could easily travel from continent to continent, thus meaning that the continents had to be close together. Pangea is possible again, although every continent would collide and would not fit like a puzzle piece.

ReplyDeleteThe most obvious piece of evidence is that the eastern coast of South America fits almost perfectly with the western coast of Africa. Fossils have also been found on different continents that now have extremely different climates.The mountain chains also provides evidence. For example, the Appalachian Mountains extend from the northeastern US to the Caledonides of Ireland, Britain, and Scandinavia. Many earthquakes and volcanoes are formed near plate boundaries, so it supports the theory of plate tectonics.
Another super-continent may form, but it's extremely unlikely that all the continents we have now will go back to fitting the exact same way they were before.

ReplyDeleteAll the continents seem to fit together like a puzzle. That could mean that million of years ago all the continents were once together to form a huge continent,and it was call Pangaea, So this can prove the continental drift really exists.

ReplyDeleteThe evidence presented for the continental drift theory, proposed by Alfred Wegener, is solid and very reputable, therefore the once existent and ancient uniformed landmass, named Pangaea, is undoubtedly possible. (Ironically, the name quite literally means "all land") For starters, plant and animal fossils have been found on opposite sides of vast oceans. The chances of that occurring as separate land masses and ending up with the same genetic code and body structure are next to impossible. There is another piece of evidence in the fossil category: Hardly any fossils found in the ocean are more ancient than 180 million years old. This is explained by Harry Hammond Hess's theory of seafloor spreading. Over the course of time, new "ocean floor" is generated when magma is driven up through ridges ("ridges" are oceanic ridges that look like the land form known as a divide, except only with a depression that looks like a cut running down the length of it) while in other locations it is being crushed and driven below the surface, therefore eventually turning it into magma once again. This explanation is also supported by the fact that ocean rock is always younger when closer to the ridges and older when further away from the ridges. However, the reasoning for thinking that Pangaea once existed is also logical, not just the jargon of the complicated scientific category. The continents and a few of the other large landmasses clearly fit to together. On first attempt, an individual will realize that the pieces are not exactly the best jigsaw puzzle they have come across. This is because the continents were effectively, put informally, "squashed and stretched" over time. India was also a separate land mass at the time before it set a crash course with Asia. It, as might know, indeed did crash. However, this collision generated so much force that it formed the famous and very large Himalayan Mountain Range, which today proudly stands with Mount Everest as the spearhead.
Some people insist stubbornly that Pangaea cannot happen again. This is rather worrying because this is a very simple matter of logical reasoning. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a extremely long oceanic ridge that runs down the middle of the Atlantic and stretches about 3/4 the way from North and South Poles. Lately, much activity has been going on around this ridge, and each year this activity is pushing the continents farther and farther apart. Basically, the Atlantic is "stretching" and the Pacific is "shrinking". Therefore, the continents will obviously end up on the other side of the world when the Pacific has shrunk to nothing. (or at least, almost nothing) On the other hand, no one alive today will still be alive when the new Pangaea has been formed simply because of the rate of motion, which happens to be 2-3 centimeters each year. The snail is so much better. With the wonders of logical reasoning, I truly believe that Pangaea Version 2.0 is inevitable.
Wegener noticed that the continents seemed to fit together, not at the continuously changing shoreline, but at the edge to their continental shelves. He derived this hypothesis from the observation that the continents in the southern hemisphere exhibit an identical pattern of rock and fossils known as the "Gondwana sequence". The most logical explanation was that the continents themselves were once parts of a much larger "super-continent" which was named Pangaea.

ReplyDeleteI.F Per. 8- There is much evidence that Wegener and Hess's theories are correct. The continents fit together evenly as if they were once attached. Fossil evidence backs this up as well. If these theories are correct, a landmass like Pangaea can very likely occur again. The continents will probably continue to move until they connect again.

A second idea supporting movement of the continents was the glacial till deposits in the southern hemisphere. With the continents in their present positions, the till deposits indicate erratic glacier motion. When the continents are put together, they show a motion of the glacier from southern Africa and Northern Australia.

For the glaciers to have been present with the continents in their current positions, much of the world should have been under ice. But this wasn't the case. Sedimentary rock examination showed a change in climates, and the only possible explanations were continental drift or movement of the poles.
